Attention Families receiving free Wi-Fi access through Internet Essentials Program

This information is important for all families enrolled in the Internet Essentials program through SPS, the program that enables your family Wi-Fi-access at no cost to you.
If your family pays for internet access, this information DOES NOT APPLY to you.
For those families receiving free Wi-Fi access at home through the SPS/Internet Essentials program – please be advised that COMCAST has made a significant change to the program.
Beginning in February, your family may be charged a fee for using Wi-Fi even if you previously received the Wi-Fi service for free. The change to a charge for the service is based on how much Wi-Fi data your family uses each month.
It is important that you understand, the Wi-Fi usage necessary for your students to learn remotely will NOT place your Wi-Fi usage over the limit and cause costs. If you use your home Wi-Fi only for remote education, you will not have to pay for Wi-Fi services. However, using Wi-Fi for services such as Netflix, Spotify, Hulu, or Playstation/Xbox, for example, may cause your Wi-Fi usage to exceed the limit and you will be charged by COMCAST. The usage limit for free Wi-Fi is 1,200 Gb per month (using Zoom or watching Netflix for one hour will use about 1 Gb).
This change is made by Comcast and not Springfield Public Schools, but we wanted to ensure that you are aware. Any questions should be directed to COMCAST at 1-800-266-2278.
